Masdar City
Masder Institute of Science and Technology
Masdar Power

Masdar City is a living city that will provide the research and the test base for its own technologies. It is a unique place, not only because it will be a centre of innovation, product development and light manufacturing in the fields of renewable energy and sustainable technologies but also because it aims to be a zero carbon, zero waste and a 100% renewable energy-powered community. These unprecedented sustainability targets mean that Masdar City will require the most cutting-edge technologies and solutions in the areas of energy and water conservation, waste management, smart grid technologies, transportation and renewable energy generation. As such, Masdar City will be a first-of-a-kind test bed for the large-scale trial and deployment of early-stage technologies and practices. Plus, in moving towards these targets, Masdar City will itself demonstrate that much higher levels of sustainability than previously imagined are achievable, even while providing a high-quality living and work environment.

The city will be home to leading multinational companies in the Clean tech sector, as well as small- and medium-sized enterprises and entrepreneurial start-ups. Companies will set up R&D labs, global headquarters and regional sales offices in the city to take advantage of the many cluster advantages, including potential access to funding and emerging technologies, and a large pool of researchers and other experts in the field.

Both General Electric and BASF will, amongst others, have operations in the city, while the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) – an inter-governmental organisation dedicated to promoting the widespread adoption and sustainable use of all forms of renewable energy – will locate its headquarters at Masdar City. The Masdar Institute of Science and Technology, developed in cooperation with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will be at the heart of the city’s R&D activities.
